Political Awareness

I’m recovering from a political event in Branson. I often find myself drained after these types of engagements.

My mind drifts back to my childhood - I’m five years old and Ronald Reagan’s debate with Jimmy Carter is fresh in my mind. Somehow my mind seems neither young nor impaired by lack of understanding. It’s clear to me.

My father meets me at the bottom of the stairs of our Los Angeles suburbian home. We’d just moved from the inner city and it’s early in the morning. He looks me in the eye and says, “You’re the man of the house - remember who you are - take care of my mother.” I know exactly what he’s talking about - I ask, “Dad are you a spy?”

“If I was I couldn’t tell you”" responds pops before walking out the door in a three-piece-suit to catch his flight…..
I know everything about where he’s going - the democratic mecca in a world surrounded by Soviet control - Berlin. I’ve watched James Bond.
In the den there is a library which I find conforting. I discover the “Republic of Plato” and can out-debate my parents in a couple of years. I’m too ignorrant to understand that I couldn’t possibly understand the complexity of the material. Too dumb to play stupid - Socrates corrupted yet another youth.

I’ve learned the art of political debate - there’s no going back.

It’s nearly 30 years later and I’m recovering from a political event. I don’t always enjoy these. In fact, it’s often hostile territory I’m walking into. Ironically, I’m not  skeptical at all nor am I a conspiracy theorist. Government bribery, when I see it - shocks me - irritates me - compels me.  This is the great danger we face today - professional lobbyist and government policies that enable wholesale politicking. It irks me when I see it and I know soon I’ll have to report it.
I’m a believer. I believe in democracy and that citizen participation in the democratic process can change our nation. I only get angry because I believe.

I know who I am and I understand what our nation could be -even as ai walk through the valley of death - political campaign season.

Remote Control Mini Helicopter Modifications

2007821141359.jpgI like remote controlled planes and cars. I especially like the micro gadgets. The tinier the more intriguing. My wife gave me a Mini Helicopter for Christmas. She picked the HX-281 by Hauxang Toys. It’s fun to fly around in the living room or at the office (where the ceilings are much higher). The infrared controller is also the charging unit and requires 6 AA batteries. The batteries are used to charge the helicopter’s onboard rechargable battery and to transmit control signals via IR during helicopter flight. It takes about 15 minutes to charge the helicopter for about 5 minutes of flying. It’s very fun… but sadly short lived. After burning a set of batteries with a very limited number of charges I began to explore what it would take to ditch the battery requirement.

A se Google searches took me into some battery spec sheets, robotics parts suppliers and electronics how-to’s. Makes me crave a trip to Radio Shack. But that’s the geek in me talking. (It’s fitting that my helicopter came from Think Geek.)

2007821141420.jpgOpening the controller showed slots for 6AA batteries in series rather than parallel. When in series the battery individual voltage as added together to determine total voltage supplied by the battery pack. 6 AA’s at 1.5 Volts each comes to 9V DC. I hit a local electronics store and paid $5 for an adapter to convert 120V AC to 9V DC with a 1 Amp (1000mA) allowance.

‘mA’ stands for milliamp. The way it was explained to me is that if the charger would only use what it needed but if there wasn’t enough mA available for function, it would run hot or not work at all. So it is my hope that the higher 1000mA choice, rather than th 300mA or 500mA, will help it work better and improve on what the batteries could provide. I just hope it doesn’t burn something up. I’ll get back with you on that.

Cutting off the adapter tip left the two wires for splicing into the controller housing. My drill was not handy so I heated my small screwdriver on the stove enough to punch a hole in the housing for the new wire. I then inserted the wire, tight a knot to avoid a force pulling it out, and spliced the wires from the adapter to the correct wires leading out of the battery compartment. A quick switch on and off confirmed correct wiring was correct and I reassembled the housing.

I was in a hurry to get on with this and my electrical box was at the office so I used duct tape to connect the wire splice inside the controller. Duct tape doesn’t present a danger does it?

I couldn’t be happier with the results. Charge time is about 2-3 minutes now, for about 7-10 minutes of power for the helicopter. A huge improvement. I didn’t expect that difference in performance. I just wanted to avoid having to buy batteries. I don’t understand the life cycle of rechargeable batteries enough to make a prediction on whether this will help or hurt the lifespan and mAh storage capacity and retention ability of the helicopter internal battery. We’ll see.

As you can (sort of) see in my low-light phone pic to the left, while trying to find the best power balance and maneuverability I removed the cab shell that is shown in the above illustration and replaced it with a face clipping from a rubber alien finger puppet from an eclectic shop in Chicago. The new face is lighter to allow more mobility, but is still heavy enough to provide the balance necessary to allow a good flight pattern, not to mention rockin-awesome.

I hope to get a lot more fun from this cool toy.

I have a mini remote controlled car that I think I’m going to do this same thing to. If you are trying to make any of these adjustments yourself and feel that my brief descriptions could use more detail, post questions to the comments and I’ll help how I can.

Missouri Presidential Primary Voter Registration Deadline Tomorrow!

The Missouri Presidential Primary voter registration deadline is end-of-day tomorrow.

I’ve not been much of a politically motivated person, but Ron Paul “cured my apathy”. Before learning about Ron Paul I didn’t feel like anything I said or did would make an actual difference.

Ron Paul stands for and strives to uphold the wisdom of the founding fathers that is imbedded in the Constitution of the United States. He is not in anyone’s pocket. For years he has been consistent, active and true to his character and constituency. I truly feel that he is solid, and passionate about holding the American People’s freedom and long-term prosperity as his goal. Read more »

Blogging from Iowa - 5 Days Before Caucus

It’s been a learning experience - something to chalk up technical shortcomings as I work as technical lead with a team covering the political caucus in Iowa.

We have one PC Laptop and one Mac. The PC power cord broke and left us with the Mac to depend on.

This was a bit of a challenge as the Mac wasn’t setup with compatible software and the evening never seemed to end - which it didn’t - installations lasted throughout the night.

My counterpart at the Washington Post seemed to have an easier time and better equipment.

Attorney Russ Schenewerk - Interview on the Missouri Bar’s failing Public Defender System

How my pro-bono clients do you have?

Russ Schenewerk : I take anywhere from 4 to 6 pro bono referrals from the public defender’s office (in an attempt to lighten their load a lttle) and advise and/or represent anywhere from 20 to 40 indigent and/or disabled clients annually in the Branson area

Are there any other attorneys who are on the same page with you in regards to sharing the caseloads of those unable to afford a proper defense?

Russ Schenewerk : I honestly don’t know. I’m sure there are some around, but to be honest it is a topic that we as attorneys need to discuss more. I once heard a St. Louis judge quip that he has “twenty years of accounts receivables” that should constitute as pro bono. We try to screen the cases in order to help people whose backs are truly up against the wall with no money and no alternatives. Read more »

View United States Congressional Spending Via Google Earth

WASHINGTON, DC – Members of Congress know where the money is going: now citizens can, too. The Sunlight Foundation today released a Google Earth application that plots the locations for almost 1,500 earmarks in the House Defense Appropriations bill. This graphic illustration of defense earmarks gives anyone with an Internet connection a bird’s eye view of exactly where Congress is directing federal spending – and the ability to investigate whether the earmarks address pressing needs, favor political contributors or are simply pure pork.

To start navigating earmarks, download Google Earth and then download Sunlight’s House Defense file. This presents a 3-D view of where the recipients of earmarks in the House Defense appropriations bill are located and corresponding links to EarmarkWatch.org –where citizens can further research each earmark and its recipient. Users can search for earmarks by city, state or zip code.

“Navigating earmarks on Google Earth is much more compelling and user-friendly than reviewing a list of earmarks or a spreadsheet,” said Ellen Miller, executive director of the Sunlight Foundation. “Americans who are concerned about government spending and the upsurge in member use of earmarks now have a simple way to visualize and investigate how Congress is awarding defense-related federal funds.”

Drawing on data from its EarmarkWatch.org site (created in collaboration with Taxpayers for Common Sense), this application lets citizens easily find and scrutinize House Defense earmarks on a state or district level. Sunlight created this Google Earth application to demonstrate the power of posting information online in graphically appealing ways that makes data more easily understood.

The Sunlight Foundation supports, develops and deploys new Internet technologies to make information about Congress and the federal government more accessible to the American people. Through its projects and grant-making, Sunlight serves as a catalyst to create greater political transparency and to foster more openness and accountability in government.
