Impromptu Baby Monitor
My wife and I have times when not at home that we need to give Dominic some needed rest. At the same time that he needs to be alone in a quiet space for his nap, we also need to know when he awakens and don’t like for him to feel the need to scream to get our attention. At home we have the trusty baby monitor but on the road or out and about we have to find another solution.
We have a makeshift baby monitor figured out. We both use T-Mobile and calls between us are free and unlimited. Her phone is a Motorola that has a loud speakerphone feature and mine is a Blackberry Pearl. We call one phone with the other, then place mine near Dom, where he is sleeping. We take her phone with us, activate speakerphone and keep the call connected. To make sure the call isn’t dropped without notice, we turn her volume up to the point where we can get occasional ambient noise. We also make a point to check it, as well as listening for the “call ended” beeps.
This setup has worked for us on several occasions. It isn’t foolproof, so avoid being “the foolish”. Don’t leave your child out in the world where danger could arrive faster than you could come to the rescue. But all-in-all, when he needs sleep and we have our phones this works great.
