As Tony addresses racial issues in Kansas City with great courage we think it’s important to point out that Mexico’s internal racial issues are far more radical than anything in the United States. While racial prejudice is generally frowned upon by the US middle class, Mexico’s great divide between the dark skinned natives and lighter skinned Mexicans is accepted.

As a youngster my friends and I would visit Baja California where bars were happy to take our money. Watching unabated racism between different groups of Mexicans bothered me.

Perhaps, we’re the same way. Maybe, social norms prevent us as a culture from taking an honest look at ourselves.
