How Will Old Media Survive?

I remember being the new kid on the block. Having worked over a decade in web development I’ve seen a lot of changes. My first job was to write strategy for a computer manufacturer. They needed to know how the Internet would change their business and how they could capitalize on its coming. Yesterday, while speaking to a superintendent of a local school district she commented “isn’t it amazing…would you have imagined” Yes ma’am, I sure did.

The real newbies over the last few years are the traditional media folks who’ve risen to become Internet stars. Some are resistors. Ozark Mountain Newspapers, who I’ve been working with, doesn’t even have a web site. This isn’t the first time transitions were found difficult. Technology is always met with opposition - in every part of written history and probably before.

The true Internet stars seem to write little - do little investigative reporting and produce very little unique content. Spin is King and in some ways the change isn’t always for the better. Here’s what PBS has to say about it.
