Attorney Russ Schenewerk - Interview on the Missouri Bar’s failing Public Defender System

How my pro-bono clients do you have?

Russ Schenewerk : I take anywhere from 4 to 6 pro bono referrals from the public defender’s office (in an attempt to lighten their load a lttle) and advise and/or represent anywhere from 20 to 40 indigent and/or disabled clients annually in the Branson area

Are there any other attorneys who are on the same page with you in regards to sharing the caseloads of those unable to afford a proper defense?

Russ Schenewerk : I honestly don’t know. I’m sure there are some around, but to be honest it is a topic that we as attorneys need to discuss more. I once heard a St. Louis judge quip that he has “twenty years of accounts receivables” that should constitute as pro bono. We try to screen the cases in order to help people whose backs are truly up against the wall with no money and no alternatives. Read more »

View United States Congressional Spending Via Google Earth

WASHINGTON, DC – Members of Congress know where the money is going: now citizens can, too. The Sunlight Foundation today released a Google Earth application that plots the locations for almost 1,500 earmarks in the House Defense Appropriations bill. This graphic illustration of defense earmarks gives anyone with an Internet connection a bird’s eye view of exactly where Congress is directing federal spending – and the ability to investigate whether the earmarks address pressing needs, favor political contributors or are simply pure pork.

To start navigating earmarks, download Google Earth and then download Sunlight’s House Defense file. This presents a 3-D view of where the recipients of earmarks in the House Defense appropriations bill are located and corresponding links to EarmarkWatch.org –where citizens can further research each earmark and its recipient. Users can search for earmarks by city, state or zip code.

“Navigating earmarks on Google Earth is much more compelling and user-friendly than reviewing a list of earmarks or a spreadsheet,” said Ellen Miller, executive director of the Sunlight Foundation. “Americans who are concerned about government spending and the upsurge in member use of earmarks now have a simple way to visualize and investigate how Congress is awarding defense-related federal funds.”

Drawing on data from its EarmarkWatch.org site (created in collaboration with Taxpayers for Common Sense), this application lets citizens easily find and scrutinize House Defense earmarks on a state or district level. Sunlight created this Google Earth application to demonstrate the power of posting information online in graphically appealing ways that makes data more easily understood.

The Sunlight Foundation supports, develops and deploys new Internet technologies to make information about Congress and the federal government more accessible to the American people. Through its projects and grant-making, Sunlight serves as a catalyst to create greater political transparency and to foster more openness and accountability in government.

Missouri Governor’s Race - Jay Nixon and Matt Blunt - Contribution Refund Policy - (AP Wire)

AP NewsBreak: Blunt, Nixon trying to redirect refund checks

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Republican Gov. Matt Blunt and his Democratic challenger, Attorney General Jay Nixon, have begun refunding millions of dollars to big donors in compliance with a state Supreme Court decision reinstating Missouri’s campaign contribution limits.

But Blunt and Nixon both are trying to redirect that money to their state political parties, which could still use it for their benefit.

Along with his refund checks to contributors, Blunt has enclosed a self-addressed stamped envelop and a contribution form to the state Republican Party.

“The Missouri Republican Party can still accept unlimited contributions,” Blunt wrote in a letter accompanying the refund checks. “I would encourage you to make a generous contribution to that important organization.” Read more »

Russia makes 1st nuke shipment to Iran (Associated Press Wire)

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia has made its first shipment of nuclear fuel to an Iranian nuclear power plant at the center of the international tensions over Tehran’s atomic program, the Foreign Ministry said Monday.

The United States and Russia said the delivery gave Iran another reason to suspend its uranium enrichment program, but an official in Tehran said it would not.

The U.S. has been unhappy about Russia helping Iran build the Bushehr nuclear plant. But President Bush has supported Russia in providing uranium fuel to Iran as long as Moscow retrieves the used reactor fuel for reprocessing, as stipulated in an agreement between Russia and Iran.

“If that’s the case - if the Russians are willing to do that, which I support - then the Iranians do not need know how to enrich,” Bush said in Fredricksburg, Va. “If the Iranians accept that uranium for civilian nuclear power, then there’s no need for them to learn how to enrich.”

Iran contends the plant is strictly for civilian purposes, but critics say it could be used to advance efforts to build nuclear weapons.

The construction of the Bushehr plant has been frequently delayed. Officials said the delays were due to payment disputes, but many observers suggested Russia also was unhappy with Iran’s resistance to international pressure to make its nuclear program more open and to assure the international community that it was not developing nuclear arms.

Russia announced last week that its construction disputes with Iran had been resolved and said fuel deliveries would begin about a half year before Bushehr was expected to go into service. Read more »

Mitt Romney Critiques Huckabee calls him Un-Republican

The primary race is interesting. Hardliners battle for candidacy and then revert to populist rhetoric for the general election. Mitt Romeny and Mike Huckabee are fighting for the sympathies of the religious conservatives but don’t expect the battle to stay out of the gutter. Here’s the latest:

HUMBOLDT, Iowa (AP) - Mitt Romney accused Republican presidential rival Mike Huckabee of “running from the wrong party” for criticizing President Bush’s foreign policy as an “arrogant bunker mentality.”

Romney defended Bush against Huckabee’s charge, which the former Arkansas governor leveled in the January-February issue of the respected journal Foreign Affairs.

“I can’t believe he’d say that,” Romney said to a gathering of about 100 supporters in a restaurant here. “I had to look again—did this come from Barack Obama or from Hillary Clinton? By JIM KUHNHENN

Did it come from John Edwards? No, it was Governor Huckabee.” Read more »

Blogging Springfield

Springfield is the big sister city to the north of Branson and ranks the third largest city in Missouri. Over the last 10 years an urban art and nightlife culture has emerged and over the course of a day I realized just how involved I am in it.

I hitched a ride with Mrs. Purvis, the wife of Branson Ward II Alderman Jack Purvis and left Branson at 8:30 A.M. after hiking down the cliffs of Hollister to their downtown Branson home. Read more »

Blue Girl Thinks Red

I grew up the son of an oil executive. Consequently, my father was also an attorney whose job it was to negotiate contracts with foreign powers. Issues involving the international struggle for light crude and natural gas infrastructure are not foreign to me.

Let’s look at Blue Girls perspective on international conflict and energy.

100 Bucks a Barrell

I’ve said it before, and I will say it again…we are witnessing a realignment of world economic and political power, and it is realigning along an energy axis, and future historians are going to write about the time in which we live as the “Emergence of the Resource Wars.”

If we don’t get a handle on this stuff, and do so double-time, the future is bleak. If you like the oil wars, you are gonna love the pending water wars. Read more »

Stone County TIF - Written for Stone County Gazette Feb 2007 by Darin Codon

The Stone County Commission took the first steps today towards approving an estimated 5 million dollar TIF (Tax Increment Financing) financed bond to improve road infrastructure to and from Silver Dollar City and streamline access to Indian Point. Silver Dollar City contends the project will substantially alleviate traffic congestion to both the Branson West park and Indian Point. Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation contends redevelopment of access roads to Silver Dollar City will increase property values, encourage growth and create both temporary and permanent jobs in Stone County.
If approved fifty percent of Silver Dollar City sales tax increases above 2006 numbers will be used to pay back the bonds. The proposed development plan in its current form represents the highest percentage of revenue and the longest term allowed through TIF legislation.. Silver Dollar City has offered to purchase the bonds they claim would be unattractive on the open market due to low anticipated returns. Read more »
